Espresso

Espresso is a brewing method that utilizes an espresso machine to force hot water through tightly packed coffee grounds at high pressure. This process yields a rich, concentrated liquid coffee topped with a layer of crema, a creamy foam. The espresso method demands finely ground coffee and a compact amount to achieve optimal results. The brewing time for espresso is remarkably quick, taking mere seconds. Espresso often serves as the foundation for other coffee beverages, including cappuccino and long black.

Step by step

Step 1: Prepare the Espresso Machine
  • Ensure your espresso machine is turned on and has reached a stable temperature. This typically takes around 20-30 minutes.
  • Preheat the portafilter, the metal filter holder, by running hot water through it or placing it on the machine’s group head.
Step 2: Grind and Dose Coffee
  • Grind your coffee beans to a fine espresso grind. The ideal grind size should resemble table salt.
  • Dose the ground coffee into the portafilter basket. A standard single espresso shot requires about 7-9 grams of coffee, while a double shot calls for 14-18 grams.
  • Level the coffee grounds evenly in the portafilter basket.
Step 3: Tamp the Coffee
  • Using a tamper, firmly press down on the coffee grounds to compact them evenly. Aim for a consistent and level tamp.
  • Wipe away any excess coffee grounds from the rim of the portafilter.
Step 4: Attach the Portafilter
  • Securely lock the portafilter into the group head of the espresso machine.
Step 5: Extract the Espresso
  • Place a shot glass or espresso cup under the portafilter spout.
  • Start the espresso machine’s brewing process. The ideal extraction time for a single shot is 25-30 seconds, while a double shot should take 30-35 seconds.
  • Monitor the espresso extraction. The espresso should flow steadily and evenly, resembling a thick honey-like consistency.
Step 6: Enjoy Your Espresso
  • Once the extraction is complete, remove the portafilter from the group head.
  • Admire the crema, the rich, velvety foam that should top your espresso shot.
  • Savor the intense flavor and aroma of your freshly brewed espresso.
